PETA was Founded in 1980. PETA is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. PETA feels that animals aren't for man to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.

PETA promotes animal rights throughout the world and they firmly believe that animals are not to be mistreated, eaten, or worn. PETA concentrates on four areas where the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time. These four areas include factory farms, laboratories, clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry.PETA also trys to work on other issues including killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of "backyard" dogs.

PETA's ways of promoting their agenda include working through public education, research, animal rescue, legislation and celebrity involvement. They also rely on special events and protest campaigns.

Lobbying

The total amount of time PETA uses on lobbying is unknown. They do not work with particular people in government but will work with those who are willing to work with them. PETA encourages members to lobby by writing letters to their elected officials that would suggest passing legislation pertaining to animal rights. They do promote state and local level lobbying.

This year alone, about $6,529,644 was spent on International Grassroots Campaigns.

An example of legislation PETA would support would be the Assembly Bill 1634 to be passed in California which would prohibit any person from owning or possessing any unaltered cat or dog over the age of four months, unless that person purchases an intact-animal permit. Violators would be fined, and the money raised from the fines would be used to fund free and low-cost spay and neuter programs.

Partisanship

PETA is a non-partisan group.
